FEM POWER NEWS

As part of EU Green Research Week at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, a key panel discussion on the topic of ‘Closing the Gender Gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM)’ took place on 3 June.

The discussion, which formed part of the inter-university collaboration within the European research network EU GREEN, brought together experts from academia, diversity management and research policy to discuss structural challenges and concrete solutions for a more equitable scientific landscape.

Of particular note was the participation of Lys Zibell and Saskia Salmen, gender and diversity consultants on the FEM POWER project. In their presentation, they highlighted how systemic changes in higher education structures – from recruitment practices to career planning – can make a decisive contribution to sustainably strengthening women’s participation in STEMM subjects.

During the week of 18–22 May, OVGU will be focusing on the topic of diversity. Through a variety of formats, we aim to provide information, encourage discussion and draw attention to the opportunities available at OVGU.

Dates:

• Tue 19 May – German Diversity Day: Information campaign on campus with leaflets and interactive activities.
• Wed 20 May – World Café as part of the Diversity Audit: Together, we will create an ‘OVGU Diversity Map’ and identify any potential gaps or areas where support is needed
• Thu 21 May – Online information session: Presentation of selected initiatives from the Equality, Diversity & Family Unit as part of the FEM-Power II project

 This year, the FEM POWER project, in collaboration with the Office for Equality and Family and the Student Marketing Department, is organising an event specifically for schoolgirls. Entitled ‘Science Sisters’, a two-day holiday camp focusing on maths, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT) will take place from 31 March to 1 April.

The programme is aimed at schoolgirls aged 16 and over who are interested in STEM subjects, wish to develop their skills in these areas, or find themselves confronted with stereotypes and prejudices. In an open and supportive atmosphere, participants will have the opportunity to take part in workshops, carry out experiments and get to know students and lecturers. The programme is complemented by elements of team-building and personal development.
