What impact does parenthood have on the due date for long-term tuition at OVGU?

The time limit for exceeding the standard period of study is extended from four semesters to a full standard period of study. Because:

The care and upbringing of children is explicitly one of the reasons that permit an extension of studies at OvGU beyond the standard period of study. The standard period of study is specific to the respective degree programs and is defined in the study and examination regulations. In the case of consecutive studies (e.g. Bachelor's and Master's degrees in succession), the standard period of study is the sum of the two individual courses of study. Normally, at OvGU you can exceed the standard period of study by four semesters before tuition fees become due. This period changes for the aforementioned case of bringing up children by studying mothers and fathers, so that the studies can now be overrun by a complete standard period of study before fees become due. After the double standard period of study, however, tuition fees are then due without any further deadlines. A deferral of long-term tuition can be requested by submitting an application with an attached copy of the child's birth certificate to the Office of Student Affairs.

Example:

A student is in the consecutive Master's program of his degree program and has previously completed the Bachelor's degree after 7 semesters. The total standard period of study is thus 10 semesters (7 semesters Bachelor + 3 semesters Master). Now his girlfriend and he are expecting a baby. Due to the joint childcare, his studies are delayed. In the 14th semester, he receives a request to pay long-term tuition fees for the following semester. By submitting an appropriate application to the Department of Student Affairs, he extends the deadline so that he can study without tuition fees until the 20th semester.

The handling of tuition fees for parents is regulated in the statutes of the OVGU, especially in §3, paragraph (1).

Regardless of the question of the due date of tuition fees, the extension of studies and, if necessary, the fulfillment of study-specific deadlines must of course be organized. This can be achieved, for example, through solutions such as special study plans and part-time study and should be clarified with the responsible study advisors and examination offices.
