FEM POWER II

The OVGU is launching the second funding phase of the ESF-financed statewide FEM POWER program for greater equality of opportunity in science and careers. Building on the successes of the first phase, we have set ourselves the goal of firmly anchoring equality as an integral part of university development—both in structures and processes. The FEM POWER measures will be based at the Office for Equality and Family, but will also be closely networked with the central service centers of the OVGU in order to exploit synergies and ensure broad institutional anchoring.

The university is thus not only responding to the increasing demands of national and international funding bodies such as the DFG, BMBF, and EU, but also understands equal opportunities as a prerequisite for sustainable science.

Gender and diversity consulting

Objective:

The establishment and expansion of gender and diversity consulting (in research, third-party funding acquisition, monitoring) aims to achieve the permanent implementation of this area at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. The development of a holistic concept ensures that the implementation of gender equality as a cross-cutting task is successfully promoted and implemented.

Target group: Leaders in science and administration, as well as staff from science management and administration.

Responsible: Lys.Ziebell@ovgu.de

Gender recruitment

Objective:

To establish and develop gender-specific recruiting at OVGU. This should take into account diverse subject cultures as well as conditions and habitats. The focus of the position is on increasing the proportion of women at all career levels and on strengthening the integration and onboarding (internationally) of female postdocs (and doctoral candidates) both at the university and in the city of Magdeburg.

Target group: Doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, female professors

Responsible: Ivette.Bartholomaeus@ovgu.de

Gender-sensitive student recruitment

As a profile university with a focus on STEM subjects, OVGU is confronted with declining social interest in

STEM subjects when it comes to recruiting students.

Objective:

To increase the visibility and attractiveness of OVGU as a place of study for girls, because the recruitment of female scientists begins with attracting female students. The first filters of interest are already set at primary school age, so it is particularly important to take action at an early age when recruiting female students. Personal contact with female scientists as role models and opportunities to get to know STEM content in practice are extremely important in this context. If offers are made exclusively in leisure time, the influence of the parental home on participation is significant. For this reason, it is important to offer a mix of voluntary opportunities for particularly interested girls as well as formats through schools or leisure centers.

Target group:

1: Female students from grades 1 to 8

2: Female students of all grades through STEM leisure activities

Responsible: Anne.Rudolph@ovgu.de

Establishment of a junior research group to support female postdoctoral researchers on their path to becoming professors

Objective:

To increase the proportion of women in the postdoctoral phase of scientific qualification (postdoctoral researchers) and thus to establish and lead a junior research group in which a postdoctoral researcher can work on an independent research topic in the STEM field and gain initial leadership experience. Funding will be provided for a postdoctoral researcher with outstanding previous achievements. At the end of the funding period, a concept will be developed to make it easier for young female researchers in the STEM field at OVGU to pursue a habilitation.

The position is explicitly intended for qualification during the postdoctoral phase. On the path to becoming a professor, the focus should be on key requirements in leadership experience, third-party funding, publication activity, and the development of one's own field of research.

Target group: Young female scientists (scientists in the postdoctoral phase)

Responsible: Caroline.Mehlmann@ovgu.de
