Ladies Night 2021 Ladies Night goes online!

The „Ladies Night for Women in Engineering Sciences“ is part of an OVGU lecture series for the promotion of young female scientists, which focuses on the career paths of women. The event was initially launched by the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering (FVST) and the Student Council of Otto von Guericke University (OVGU) Magdeburg in 2012 as FVST Ladies Night and started with around 20 participants. This year, the Ladies Night will take place in a new, digital format. Due to Corona, there will be an entire week of events. The week of April 19-23, 2021 will feature a variety of presentations, workshops, application portfolio checks, panel discussions, and introductions to several companies. This way to the program

SAFE THE DATE: Interdisciplinary Online Fair for Young Scientists at the OVGU

"Disciplinary research with a view to gender and diversity"
On 26.05.2021, the day of teaching, the first Interdisciplinary Online Research Fair by and for young scientists of the OVGU will take place. The fair is organized by the Faculty of Human Sciences in cooperation with the Office for Gender Equality at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Education, work and health represent only a selection of research fields in which behaviors and needs and societal conditions vary based on biological and social gender and diversity characteristics. Increasingly, this variation is reflected in research projects at OVGU. From questions of identity formation, to studies on Fat Feminism, to research in the field of mobile working or career choice, everywhere perspectives of gender and sex research or questions about diversity lead to innovative approaches and surprising results. The aim of the research fair is to support interdisciplinary exchange between researchers who take an ex- or implicit look at gender and/or diversity from their respective subject perspectives. The Research Fair will take place digitally via Zoom on May 26, 2021 from 1:00pm to 7:00pm. The presenting young researchers will present their current or already completed projects in short talks and have the opportunity to present their scientific posters. There will also be enough room for stimulating, constructive discussions. The detailed schedule will be available in due course on the homepage of the Office for Gender Equality at
http://www.bfg.ovgu.de/Veranstaltungen/Interdisziplin%C3%A4re+Onlinemesse+f%C3%BCr+Nachwuchswissenschaftler%2Ainnen+an+der+OVGU.html
Participation in the research fair is free of charge, but prior registration by e-mail is requested, indicating the session in which you wish to participate. Registration at:: gleichstellungsbeauftragte@ovgu.de. You will then receive the zoom link for participation by e-mail.

Cycling for the OVGU

The Academic Bicycle Challenge will take place again this year. The goal of the challenge is to cycle as many kilometers as possible for one's own university in the period from June 1 to June 30. Universities can then compare themselves with each other in an international ranking. "The basic idea is to use the bicycle more often instead of the car. At the same time, the health aspect is promoted here, but the environment is also sustainably protected," explains Dr. Mario Damerow, head of the sports center at Magdeburg University. With a distance of 144,059 km cycled, the participants of the OVGU secured first place in the worldwide ranking last year. As a prelude to the Challenge, a family day is again planned for June 5. "Together, the whole family, flatmates or anyone who likes will cycle on this day, when and where they like, and record the kilometers cycled with the Naviki app as part of the Academic Bicycle Challenge," explains Dr. Damerow. In the period from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be the opportunity to make a short stop at the university boathouse at Rotehornpark and fortify oneself there with free coffee, drinks and homemade cake. All of this, of course, in strict compliance with hygiene regulations.

Cover präsent magazine präsent. A magazine for people with an open mind

The first issue of the magazine from Magdeburg was published!
"Getting into conversation with each other and looking with compassion at other people's lives - the "präsent" magazine invites you to do so. People from Magdeburg talk about their passions and talents, but also about their fears and problems. They were not only interviewed for this. They write themselves, write poetry, draw, express themselves without words." The issue is available online and for download at www.praesent-magazin.de/

Logo Network Women's and Gender Studies NRW CfP: Crisis and Utopia. Gender Perspectives on a "Good Life" (not only) in the Pandemic

A good life requires not only a secure income, housing and sufficient food, but also love, care, affection, art and culture, and much more. Many "self-evident things" take on new, different meanings as a result of the pandemic. The current Corona pandemic with all its crisis-like effects on life forms the starting point for the theme of this year's annual conference "Crisis and Utopia. Gender Perspectives on a 'Good Life' (not only) in the Pandemic." The "good life" between crisis and utopia is currently occupying many gender researchers from different scientific disciplines: gender-sensitive contributions from medicine on the current pandemic as well as from history show how threats were experienced at other times. How are fear and hope thematized in literature or film? How do facts and fiction relate to each other in public (media) discourse? What answers does feminist philosophy give to existential questions? How do gender scholars look at the challenges for economy, democracy and the world of work? How high is the retraditionalization effect in everyday life? Researchers from different disciplines are cordially invited to participate in the program of the annual conference of the Network Women's and Gender Studies NRW at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Campus Essen) on Friday 5 November 2021 with a 20-minute presentation. It is planned to publish individual contributions as part of the journal Netzwerk Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung NRW. Please send your abstract of max. 1 page to: beate.kortendiek@netzwerk-fgf.nrw.de by May 16, 2021. Online registration for the annual conference is now open at

Interview call Self Determined Call for interviews for a PhD project on sexual self-determination

For a PhD project on the topic of sexual self-determination, interview partners are needed. In her cultural studies doctoral thesis, Ann-Catrin Schwombeck of the University of Paderborn is conducting research on the topic of sexual self-determination. She is interested in experiences with sexuality courses or sexuality-related workshops, in which there is room for the thematization of one's own sexuality and one's own body in a variety of ways. Whether these have taken place online or on-site is irrelevant. If you have attended such courses and would like to report on your experiences, the PhD student would be happy to have you as an interview partner. No special prior knowledge is relevant. In any case, the interview will be anonymous and personal data will be treated strictly confidential. Due to the current situation, the interviews will be conducted online and will last between 1 -2 hours. If you are interested and have any questions about the interview process or the interview questions, please feel free to contact us at selbst.bestimmt@gmx.net

Conference Gender Pay Gap Gender Pay Gap - On the Value and Unvalue of Work | Online Conference on April 22/23

The conference focuses on the question of the characteristics and causes of the gender pay gap in the sense of unequal pay for work. The historical perspective on the gender pay gap enables us to discuss its manifold interconnections with developments of inequality structures on labor markets and in the social organization of work in general. The conference asks about the policies of national and international trade union organizations regarding the valuation of work. Drawing on a broad understanding of "value," it asks how work has been valued and gendered and what notions of gender and gender roles underlie this valuation. Questions will be raised about the recognition and (self-)valuation of work beyond remuneration and about the institutionalization of inequality in and by means of legal regulations. Please register for the event by April 15, 2021 with Heike Voos via E- Mail at public.history@fes.deto receive a link to the video conference. Further information and the flyer for the conference can be found here.

With many exercises and practical examples, you will look together at the importance of gender-equitable language in our society and in our everyday lives. How can gender-appropriate language be used in concrete terms and who feels addressed or included when? The participation fee for this workshop is 20€. Logo Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Office Online seminar "Project management compact" on 28 April

The Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Office is hosting the online seminar "Project Management Compact" on April 28, 2021. In the seminar, helpful and field-tested tools for project planning will be shown and applied. The planning, process and financing of time-limited projects differ significantly from the processes in everyday work and therefore require their own methods and management. There is no guarantee for the success of a project, but there are several helpful and proven tools for project planning and process control - from the establishment of an organizational and operational structure with appropriate communication structures, to time management, personnel and resource deployment, marketing, financial planning and contract design, to obstacle and risk analyses. In the seminar, the most important of these will be learned and applied. The cost is 50 euros.

Contents:

  • From the idea to the concept
  • Project planning steps
  • Methods of project work, including creativity techniques
  • Process organization: network plan and bar chart
  • Time management: time planning, prioritization
  • Team management: information, communication, motivation, delegation
  • Obstacle analysis and conflict management

Logo Heinrich Böll Foundation worldwide Online seminar "Counterargument online - contradicting Hate Speech" on 29 April

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is hosting the online seminar "Counterargument online - Contradicting Hate Speech" on April 29, 2021. Right-wing argumentation, fake news or racist hate speech in social networks are increasingly coming into focus: online communication has a significant influence on the success of extreme right-wingers and racists in society, in elections and in their own environment. On the other hand, it is becoming clear how important it is to show one's colors in different online situations and to challenge right-wing demagogy. Arguing online is thus no longer "sofa activism" but has become a serious challenge for civil society. The two-hour online seminar provides an introduction to online courage. The seminar introduces which communication situations can be distinguished and which options for action they offer. Discuss, position, denounce? The participants sharpen their awareness of how they can and want to act sensibly in each of these situations. For more information and to register, click here.

The participation fee is 45 euros. Further information and registration instructions can be found here.

Logo Heinrich Böll Foundation NRW Online Seminar "Anti-Bias Education" from May 17-21, 2021

From May 17-21, 2021, the Heinrich Böll Foundation in cooperation with the Center for Social Inclusion, Migration and Participation will host the online seminar "I see something you don't: Anti-Bias Education". A critical examination of discriminatory attitudes is one of the core questions of the anti-bias approach (bias=prejudice): How do I deal with prejudices, power and ideologies of superiority and inferiority of myself and others? This involves, among other things, not only interpreting "cultural frames" but also looking at various other potentially discriminatory factors such as gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, mental and physical challenge, etc. The long-tested political education approach of anti-bias can provide valuable assistance in raising sensitivity to discrimination and breaking down barriers to participation in society. The approach can also help to counteract the recent increase in agitation and destructive tendencies against democratic ways of thinking and acting in society. By creating space for self-reflection, short professional inputs and individual, pair and small group work as well as moderated exchange of experiences, the interactive workshop will provide initial suggestions for a prejudice-conscious approach to diverse potentials and barriers for educational work and social participation. Further information as well as a possibility to register can be found here.

Workshop Creativity Techniques Workshop "Creativity Techniques - Finding New Ideas and Solutions Quickly"

The VHS-Bildungswerk will hold a workshop on creativity techniques on June 2, 2021, to help quickly find new ideas and solutions to creative blocks or in conversations. The cost of participation is 199 euros. Registration is requested as soon as possible. In this workshop, various creativity techniques and methods will be presented that make it easier to find or develop new ideas. This will guarantee that the next team meeting will end in a firework of ideas with fun, good humor and teamwork. Experiences from cultural education and design thinking will be incorporated into this workshop. Participants will learn to change perspectives, try out the methods in practice and receive non-stop inspiration. More information and a way to register as soon as possible can be found here.

Low diversity: More than three quarters of German university executives are male

The leadership of German universities is a fairly homogeneous group. The typical head of a German university is male, 57 years old and from West Germany. An analysis by the CHE Center for Higher Education Development shows that foreign birthplaces or previous practical vocational training are more likely to be found in private university management. The curricula vitae of around 300 current presidents and rectors were evaluated for this purpose. Less than a quarter of German universities are currently headed by a woman. In September 2020, the proportion of women nationwide was 22.9 percent. At private universities, which CHE included in its analysis for the first time, it was slightly lower than at state universities, at 20.8 percent. The majority of rectors and presidents were born in Germany. Only 15 persons had a foreign place of birth, the majority of whom (ten persons) headed a private university. Within Germany, most of the university heads come from a western German state. Currently, ten state universities are headed by people from eastern German states - including Berlin. "German university managements - unlike their students - continue to be a fairly homogeneous group," Ulrich Müller sums up. The head of political analyses at the CHE Center for Higher Education Development would also like to see more diversity in the top chairs of universities with regard to the next generation of science managers. "The managers of tomorrow already need role models who signal to them that they can also make a career in the science system with non-classical biographies," says Müller. Continue reading

Fourth "Federal Report on Young Academics" published

For young scientists, working conditions at German universities have not improved significantly since the last statistical data collection in 2017. The Federal Report of the Consortium of Young Scientists shows that about nine out of ten young scientists are employed on a fixed-term basis and that the proportion of women has also increased only minimally overall, especially at the career stages after the doctorate. The proportion of women among those who successfully completed their habilitation in 2018 was 32 percent; among newly appointed junior, W2, and W3 professorships, it was 43 percent, 34 percent, and 27 percent, respectively. More on this in the Federal Report on Young Academics and in the Tagesspiegel. In their article "More fairness, more quality", Axel Gürtler and René Krempkow outline six concrete proposals for measures to improve the promotion of young scientists.

CHE study: Family orientation as top priority at management level helps universities during and after Corona pandemic

The impact of the Corona pandemic poses major challenges for university staff and students with family responsibilities. A recent publication by the CHE Center for Higher Education Development shows which measures for balancing family and career or studies have proven effective so far during the current crisis. Together with the association Familie in der Hochschule (Family in Higher Education), CHE therefore advocates, among other things, anchoring the topic of family justice across the board and permanently at the highest management level. The association Familie in der Hochschule (Family in Higher Education), together with CHE, has taken the current pandemic situation as an opportunity to put family orientation at universities to the test and to identify suggestions for improvement. To this end, the authors of the study interviewed family officers at German universities in the summer of 2020. The focus was on family-oriented structures that had proved particularly effective at universities during the pandemic or that had been newly developed during this time. To the study

CEWSjournal No. 126 published!

Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention

It is a serious setback for the protection of women's and human rights in Turkey and in Europe. The CEDAW Alliance Germany condemns Turkey's withdrawal from the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence - the Istanbul Convention. The withdrawal sends a fatal signal to global efforts of the fight against violence against women and girls and the rights of the LGBTQI community. In particular, refugee women, queer people, and children are now more vulnerable than ever with the withdrawal from the Convention. Hard-won rights for equality, freedom, and self-determination for these groups of people are thus lost. The withdrawal does not come as a surprise. It is the result of political and social movements that threaten women's rights as a whole and their rights to a life free of violence. Such movements can be observed not only in Turkey, but also in other European countries such as Poland and Hungary, as well as worldwide. There is an urgent need for action. The German government must draw political consequences for relations with Turkey at the national and international level and give a clear rejection to anti-feminist efforts in Turkey and worldwide. The full press release of the CEDAW Alliance Germany can be found here.

Patriotism for educated citizens [sic!]

The timing could hardly be better: After a year of pandemic, nerves are on edge across society. The general soreness is fueling old and new world conspiracy narratives and the battle cries of prominent white old men against any form of minority justice. The star theme of their hate sermons is always gendered language. Henning Lobin explains in Sprachkampf. How the New Right Instrumentalizes the German Language, why. Continue reading
