Lili Elbe "The story of Lili Elbe. A man changes his sex" | Reading on 01 October 2020 in Magdeburg

In the 1920s, the Danish painter Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda, an equally successful artist, led an eventful life between Denmark, France and Italy. When Gerda one day asks him to model for her in women's clothes, she sets in motion a development whose end neither of them can imagine. For fun, Einar appears more and more often at social events as a mysterious woman named "Lili". But the game soon turns into a serious inner conflict. Einar struggles painfully for his identity, until he finally undergoes several operations in Berlin and Dresden to continue living as Lili Elbe. On October 1, 2020, at 2:00 p.m., in the Old City Hall of the City of Magdeburg, a cooperation event of the State Agency for Civic Education, the Office for Equality Issues of the City of Magdeburg, and the full-time Equal Opportunity Commissioner of the Ministry of Education will be held with the title: "The Story of Lili Elbe. A man changes his sex" will take place. You are cordially invited to the reading of the bestseller from 1932 and to a discussion about transsexuality in the past and present. You can find the flyer of the event here.
The event is public. Due to Corona the number of seats is unfortunately very limited. Please register for the event.

CyberMentor Plus Online mentors wanted! University program CyberMentor Plus: Support for girls in STEM

The online mentoring program CyberMentor Plus is looking for STEM women as mentors. Since 2005, Germany's largest scientifically supported program has been successfully inspiring schoolgirls for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Thanks to the great support of dedicated female mentors, 71% of the female participants surveyed later chose to study or train in the STEM field. The CyberMentor Plus program is a cooperation project between the University of Regensburg and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Working STEM women from business and science as well as students of a STEM subject from the 3rd semester and trainees from the 2nd year of training act as mentors. They accompany a female student online for one year and exchange information flexibly over a protected online platform. Four times a year, you will also exchange information by phone or online with your mentee's STEM teacher, who heads a STEM-AG at the school. This gives you a better insight into the life of your mentee and enables you to provide her with optimal support.

How does mentoring work?

    • online mentoring of a female student in grades 5 to 13
    • weekly exchange 30 minutes - flexible scheduling
    • program duration one year, participation free of charge
    • role model as a STEM woman: support for STEM projects, exchange on STEMtopics, studies & career
    • exchange four times a year with the STEM teacher of your mentee
    • training videos & helpful tips for mentoring on the platform

How do you benefit as a mentor?

  • network with up to 800 other STEM women
  • exclusive offers from our sponsors and partners
  • gain experience through mentoring
  • voluntary commitment through promotion of young people

Mentors are still being sought for the round start on October 14, 2020. You can register at: www.cybermentor.de/index.php/anmeldung

Call for Papers! Working in the Corona Crisis

The consequences of the corona pandemic are changing the social order of production and reproduction. The effects of the crisis extend to labor market dynamics, the internal structuring of gainful employment, the demands of many jobs, and the distribution and recognition of paid and unpaid care work. In this context, structural changes in the social organization of productive and reproductive work are becoming apparent: This and beyond capital relations, how and by whom are services provided that are needed? And who will replace whom when health protection, fluctuations in demand and changing time regimes change the demands on work? Due to the prioritization and massive restriction of the labor market caused by the pandemic, the question of the "system relevance" of certain professions and their lack of financial and cultural recognition has entered the public discourse. The debate is about the increase in gender inequality caused by the 'privatization' or re-familialization of care and education through the (partial) closure of daycare centers, schools and other institutions. An (increasing) precarization of gainful employment can be observed not only in short-time work and solo self-employment, but also in view of the transnational interdependence of the labor market. The opportunities for unionization and access to compensation payments are very unequally distributed. With regard to social inequality, it is of particular interest to examine the consequences of short-time work regulations for employees with already low wages, the consequences of short- and long-term employment bans for certain industries (such as sex work), and the consequences of the crisis for unemployed wage earners. Sudden changes were also implemented in the company organization of work, the medium and long-term consequences of which are likely to be significant for the future organization of work. Most striking are the new experiences with the digitalization of work, as expected in particular from the further institutionalization of the 'home office'. Furthermore, the question of changes in or for the representation of interests within the company arises, among other things as a result of short-time work regulations, restrictions on exchange and decision-making possibilities through bans on face-to-face meetings, but also new possibilities through digital cooperation. In addition, the developments on the labor market must be placed in an international comparative perspective, including a focus on newly emerging or worsening social inequality due to unemployment, precarious employment and short-time work. The interdisciplinary nature of labor research opens up a perspective to comprehensively analyze and discuss the restructuring of labor in the Corona crisis under aspects of social inequality. Against this background, the editors of the magazine ARBEIT would like to invite contributors from the fields of sociology of work and industrial sociology, gender studies, industrial psychology, political science, but also business administration as well as industrial and engineering science to submit text proposals on the following (or related) topics from a theoretical, empirical, nationally, transnationally or internationally comparative research perspective:

  • Which structural shifts in the labor market occur in the pandemic?
  • How do transnational employment systems and labour markets change as a result of national labour and entry restrictions or bans?
  • What logics does the social construction of occupations as "systemically relevant" follow in the context of the care crisis in pandemic times?
  • What findings promise comparative perspectives on industries, regions, countries or groups of countries?
  • What patterns does the digitalization of work and acquisition under the conditions of the new health care system reveal?
  • How does the pandemic influence the gender-differentiating division of labor between gainful employment and family work between developmental tendencies of re-traditionalization and equalization?
  • What are the consequences of these processes of change for co-determination and representation of interests at the workplace?

Both theoretical and empirical contributions are welcome. Please send a one- to two-page abstract on your proposed contribution to the editors of the focus issue by January 15, 2021 at the latest: almut.peukert@uni-hamburg.de, martin.seeliger@uni-hamburg.de, heike.jacobsen@b-tu.de, as well as in CC to the editorial staff of the magazine ARBEIT: frank.seiss@isf-muenchen.de. You will receive a reply by February 15, 2021. The deadline for submission of manuscripts with a maximum of 45,000 characters is June 1, 2021. The contributions are intended for issue 4/2021 of ARBEIT.

Adult education center Magdeburg Departure, emancipation and political maturity - Women in adult education | Lecture on 13.10.2020 in Magdeburg

On 28 April 1919 the first educational institute for adults with the name Magdeburger adult education center took up its work in Magdeburg under large public participation, with debates in the press, promoted by much Prominenz and driven forward engaged men and women of the city. From the beginning women and men learned and taught equally and together in the institutions of adult education. Adult education centers offered women a wide range of opportunities to develop professionally on the one hand and to pass on their knowledge on the other. When the three-class voting system was abolished in 1919, women could go to the polls and be elected to political office themselves. They took on responsibilities in educational and social policy. The cultural scientist Heike Heinrich shows the beginnings and the outstanding achievements of women in the field of adult education under grown political chances and presents women from Magdeburg who shaped the development of adult education centers in a special way. Excursuses to the women at adult education centers in other cities, at the Bauhaus and in the politics of the 1920s complete the picture of this time of awakening. Registration is possible until 06.10.2020 either directly at the Städtische Volkshochschule or at www.vhs.magdeburg.de, quoting course number G64009.

Online-Seminar "Gender Roles in European Comparison

On November 9 and 10, 2020, the online seminar "Across national borders - gender images and gender roles in European comparison: everything the same, everything different?" In the online seminar, the aim is to raise awareness of role models and role expectations for young women and girls as well as for young men and boys and gender-related identity and personality development. The experiences of young people and the resulting desire for change should be made heard. On the basis of the European project "New Perspectives - Gender Sensitive Approaches in Youth Work" it will be shown how role stereotypes, role expectations and possibly also discrimination based on gender are experienced in identity and personality development. The training offers low-threshold methods for dealing with the topic of gender and role expectations, identity and personality development in educational work with disadvantaged young people. Participants are pedagogical experts from Germany as well as representatives from the organizations involved in the project. Detailed information and the registration form can be found here

Argumentation training against sexism Register now! Seminar "Argumentation training against sexism" from 16-17 October in Halle (Saale)

The situations in which we or others experience sexist or antifeminist discrimination are still an everyday reality. How we can argue and react in these situations to empower ourselves and others will be practiced together in the seminar. Deeply rooted are antifeminist ideologies also in the right-wing scene, whether online or "analogue". The right-wing circles of AfD also know how to place these issues well for themselves. How can we deal with them? Defending one's own position of diversity of gender, family and sexual lifestyles is the focus of the training. The .lkj) Saxony-Anhalt and the Network for Democracy and Courage Saxony-Anhalt invite you to the seminar "Argumentation Training against Sexism" on 16 and 17 October 2020. Workshop on masculinity and male involvement in sexualized violence on November 12, 2020

Boys* and men* as victims of sexualized violence - omnipresent in the Catholic Church, sports clubs and media reports, and yet mostly "invisible", classified as "perpetrators" and/or neglected in support structures against sexualized violence. Wildwasser Magdeburg, as a specialized counselling center against sexualized violence, has also been a contact point for boys* and men* affected by sexualized violence for many years. However, boys* and men* do not feel explicitly addressed by the word "victims". Persons from the social environment and professionals often share this perception. Since the beginning of the year, the association Wildwasser Magdeburg has been involved in a project of Aktion Mensch to develop and expand professional counseling for male* victims as well as further education and prevention. In the course of this they would like to analyze the needs of boys* and men* in the state of Saxony-Anhalt together with their colleagues from ProMann. The association therefore cordially invites you to a workshop discussion "Masculinity and male* affectedness of sexualized violence" on 12.11.2020 in Magdeburg. Your experiences with (affected) boys* and men* should benefit the regional needs of the target group in the medium term in a methodical exchange among colleagues. You can find the invitation together with information and the registration form here

Saxony-Anhalt's nationwide Gender Research Day 2020 goes online

With regret we have to announce that due to the Corona crisis the state-wide Day of Gender Research Saxony-Anhalt cannot take place this year as a presence event in Magdeburg as planned. The realization of an event with different formats does not seem possible if a necessary hygiene concept is observed. Restrictions in the possibilities of business trips as well as the conditions imposed by the institutions are also uncertainties that speak against holding the event as a face-to-face event. The event is now to take place as the 11th Saxony-Anhalt Gender Research Day "SOLIDARITIES" in November 2021. For this year, the Coordination Office for Gender Research and Equal Opportunities Saxony-Anhalt is planning a virtual interactive event format in the time window of the planned conference on 26.11.2020. Further information will follow shortly on the KGC homepage at www.kgc-sachsen-anhalt.de.

The Conni problem. The Debate on Gender and Diversity in Daycare Centers

Actually, it is an old hat, the debate about gender and diversity in daycare facilities. But in an article in the FAZ, inclusion researchers Bernd Ahrbeck and Marion Felder take up old prejudices, which they link with current discussions about transgender issues and the increased visibility of trans young people in public. The two professors suggest that transgender issues have become a dominant fashionable topic in German day-care centers for diversity and gender-sensitive education. Heike Mauer from the blog interdisziplinäre geschlechterforschung, on the other hand, believes that this is primarily a way of addressing prejudices and propagating anti-gender and especially trans- and queer hostility. For gender- and diversity-sensitive education at daycare centers does not suffer from a "too much" of trans and inter inclusiveness, but rather from the superiority of Conni - a (picture-book) figure who stands for heteronormativity and a culture of dominance. Ms. Architect.

In the foyer of the Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia an exhibition is dedicated to women in the profession of architecture. For more than 100 years they have been active in this professional field. Is the special focus on women actually still contemporary? Do we really have to add them to the history of architecture today? Apparently so, even if the lobby of female architects and urban planners is still called the "Architektenkammer" in the 21st century and even recognized female architects like Alison Brooks have to consider: "We grow up with heroes and gods who are all male". The exhibition, a cooperative project of the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt am Main, the Museum of Building Culture North Rhine-Westphalia and the Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia, presents contemporary women architects in Foyer 21. Their design concepts are made clear in one project at a time. They shape city silhouettes, create apartments, meeting places and interiors, places of learning and landscapes. They perspective the coexistence of the future, research, teach and guide. Becomes obvious: They make impressive contributions to the development of architecture and urban planning. more

Murdered because they are women - but femicides are not mentioned in crime statistics

The title theme of the current digital edition of the zwd political magazine FRAUEN & POLITIK is femicides, which have not yet become a criminal offence in their own right in the police crime statistics despite urgent demands from politics and research. The results of the crime statistics for the year 2019, which were published in spring 2020, presented in this magazine demonstrate the urgency of a serious examination of the fact that last year 120 women were murdered and 120 women were beaten to death. The motives of the perpetrators are not recorded in PKS. However, Professor Dr. Kristina Wolff deals with these case details of the women affected by murder and manslaughter. She is one of the guest authors in this issue. Closely linked to this is the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in Germany, which has not really progressed since the 2018 agreement became valid law in Germany. Actually, this task belonged as a central element in the equality strategy adopted by the German government, but is only found there in a subordinate clause. The current digital edition of zwq magazine reports in detail on the government strategy. A partial edition of the current digital edition with the topic addressed can be found here

Women in management positions: Giffey promotes cross-party alliance

One third of women on supervisory boards of larger companies, but only 8 percent on the management boards of German companies: The SPD-led federal ministries, women's associations and female members of parliament of all parliamentary groups are striving for a reform of the law on executive positions. At the forum of the association, Federal Minister of Family Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD) called on women on supervisory boards to cooperate across party lines in order to help the draft amendment to the law succeed against the resistance of large parts of the CDU/CSU. Digital Learning Resources on Gender: A Reflection on Practice

At the beginning of 2020, the corona pandemic catapulted the German university landscape at the speed of light towards digital teaching. In keeping with the idea of Open Educational Resources (OER), the unexpected digital semester led to teachers of gender studies making increasing use of existing digital learning resources. In the course of this development, an open, digital learning resource "What is Gender?" was developed and increasingly used in cooperation with the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU) and the team of the Network Women's and Gender Studies North Rhine-Westphalia. The learning resource has now been critically reflected upon: Why are certain formats of the OER so popular and with whom? What challenges does this pose for a power-critical (further) development of these formats? Is an OER platform for gender content even needed? For a complete reflection please click here

Relevance of gender and diversity in research

In some research projects, the consideration of gender and diversity dimensions can lead to the avoidance of "blind spots" and thus increase the scientific quality of the results. Therefore, the reflection of gender and diversity should be part of the preparation of each research project and - where relevant - be addressed in the proposal. Gender and diversity in research are not equally relevant for every project. The importance of these dimensions varies depending on the research context, topic and methods. The German Research Foundation (DFG) has now issued a statement underlining the importance of considering gender and diversity in research projects. It thus plays a pioneering role in the German science system. The statement "Gender and Diversity - Significance for Research Projects" as well as information and examples for all scientific fields can be found here

New issue of the online journal kultur&geschlecht published

This year's summer issue #25 of the online journal kultur&geschlecht brings together four contributions: two texts, a radio feature and a short film. Each contribution shows in different media ways and by means of different objects like contemporary pop feminism, the Netflix series Pose, the virtual life simulation game Die SIMS and the power of the YouTube algorithm for right-wing political movements that the critical analysis of culture and gender in popular culture includes the perspective on the relationship between media and power. to the issue

New publication: Top executives. Portraits of women in leadership positions

Women achieve a lot - and rarely lead. The book "Spitzenkräfte. Porträts von Frauen in Führungspositionen", which has now been published by oekom-Verlag. The book presents 13 women who have already made their way into leadership - and whose role model inspires other women to follow their own path. The women portrayed come from various levels of management and professional backgrounds. Among those portrayed are Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius (Head of the Alfred Wegener Institute), Hiltrud Werner (VW Board of Management), Natalie Müller-Elmau (Head of 3Sat), Dr. Julia Verlinden (Member of the Bundestag for Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), but also craftswomen such as the master of the garb Angelika Nowotny and the sailmaker Christine Tecklenburg. Thirteen personalities describe their path to more professional responsibility, tell of obstacles and how they overcame them. They show very individual solutions for concrete questions of today. Texts on the topic of "Women in leadership positions" complement the portraits. The book was published by oekom-Verlag in cooperation with the Leben & Umwelt/Heinrich Böll-Stiftung Niedersachsen foundation. It is available here
