Mental strategies in dealing with everyday challenges of doctoral students on 22.01.2020

On 5 dates in February and March, Techniker Krankenkasse invites doctoral candidates to a series of seminars to develop strategies for dealing with everyday challenges. You will learn methods and strategies for coping with the pressure to perform in research and publishing ("publish or perish"), time and deadline pressure, possibly financial burdens and family obligations. Good time management is as much a part of the program as getting to know autogenic training. In addition, the seminar shows doctoral students sustainable ways to protect themselves from stress and to overcome exam nerves or stage fright.
An information event will take place on 22.01.2020 from 13-14 hrs in the seminar room of the university library. Seminar language is German. You can find more information and a link to registration here.

Workshop Career Planning on 06. and 07.02.2020

The workshop Career Planning will take place from 06. to 07.02.2020, in each case from 9-17 o'clock, in English language.
In the phase of scientific qualification there is often uncertainty about how the further career should and can be planned. De facto, as an academic you have excellent chances to take a career path that suits you and that will inspire you in the long run and lead to inner satisfaction. The workshop supports you in concretizing this path. Based on the opportunities that your individual profile offers professionally, the focus is on the question of how you can realize such options. The seminar is intended as an aid to conscious planning for a career outside of science, i.e. in the free economy or in another professional field.
You can find more information and a link for registration here.

Lecture "Problems of the history of science and technology and the work of Otto von Guericke" on 07.01.2020

On 07.01.2020 a lecture by Prof. Dr. Andrea Wolffram on gender relations in the technical sciences will be held as part of the lecture series "Problems of the history of science and technology and the work of Otto von Guericke", organised by Prof. Mathias Tullner in OvGG e.V., Guericke Centre (Lukasklause, Schleinufer 1).
Dienur's slowly increasing number of women in technical courses of study is explained by the development of technical sciences as an academic discipline. Thus, the analysis of the lines of development shows why it remained effectively closed to women even after universities opened up to them at the end of the 19th century. Dramatic historical events such as the Second World War or the Sputnik shock in the race for supremacy in space, thus circumstances in which highly qualified specialists were lacking, have, however, repeatedly led to women finding temporary entry into the technical sciences. These events show how strongly the exclusion and integration of women in the technical sciences is influenced by the respective formation of gender and power relations in a society. The lecture will take a closer look at these developments in order to be able to classify and evaluate recent comprehensive gender equality policy measures to motivate women for technical disciplines.
Guest Professor Dr. Andrea Wolffram holds the Marianne-Schminder Guest Professorship with partial denomination of Gender Studies at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (01.12.2018-31.05.2021) and is based at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. She is also a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology at the RWTH Aachen University. Her research interests combine technology and science research with gender sociological perspectives. Network Women's and Gender Studies NRW: Ready to cross borders. Interview about Emmy Noether with Mechthild Koreuber

Emmy Noether (1882-1935) was in many ways the first mathematician of the 20th century. With her unusual working methods and original thinking, she made a major contribution to bringing structural thinking into the mathematical disciplines. Already with her postdoctoral thesis of 1918 she solved central mathematical problems of the theory of relativity. As a woman and a Jew, teaching in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s, she was exposed to multiple professional discrimination. Sandra Beaufaÿs spoke with Mechthild Koreuber, whose research has initiated an interdisciplinary exchange on the work and biography of the scientist. Still 90 per cent male quota on management boards

Five years ago, the Federal Cabinet decided on a women's quota for supervisory and management boards of listed companies and companies subject to co-determination. The quota applies to the supervisory boards of the 105 companies currently affected, but not to their management boards. For the Federal Minister for Women's Affairs, it is unacceptable that hardly any progress is being made in appointing more women to the boards of directors: "Anyone who continues to report the target figure of "zero" and fails to give plausible reasons for this must expect sanctions," Giffey announced.  More.

Making forgotten female artists visible

The Bauhaus history and the exhibitions of the National Gallery were and still are a presentation of the male stars. Now the women, who have also set standards for art and design, are to be made visible. The forgotten works of art by women before 1919 in the Old National Gallery are our theme, as are the forgotten Bauhaus women. More.

European Commission presents the "Green Deal

On 11th December 2019 the European Commission presented its "Green Deal", a package of measures that aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The challenges of climate change are to be met with a programme that simultaneously promotes economic growth, for example by investing in green technologies. As part of the "Green Deal", a roadmap with 50 actions has been drawn up which covers all economic sectors and will also have an impact on the direction of European research funding.
