News Corona Changes due to COVID-19

Due to the still ongoing measures in the context of COVID-19, we would like to inform you about changes in dates of events from the last newsletter (03/2020):

  • The academic evening planned for 5 May with the topic: "How  to deal with the topic of anti-Semitism as Church and science in our country?" is postponed to 24 November!

In case of further changes, you will be informed here.

Stay healthy!

Your support is needed: Petition "Multiple burdens for scientists with care obligations must not be ignored!

The majority of the scientific and artistic staff is employed on fixed-term contracts, taking over a large part of the core scientific activities in research and teaching at universities and research institutions. Due to the pandemic-related measures, their activities are currently severely restricted and heavily burdened. The Federal Government has also recognised this and is now attempting to counteract the negative effects on science caused by the pandemic by amending the Law on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in the Science and Research Sector of 22 April 2020. This law provides that universities and research institutions as employers have the possibility to extend the permissible fixed-term contracts of scientific and artistic staff by a maximum of another six months. Scientific and artistic staff with care activities must not only (re-)organise their work in their home office, but also supervise, educate, train and maintain it at the same time. This leads to an increased precarisation of the working conditions of this part of the employees on fixed-term contracts. The petition calls on the legislator to improve the amendments to the Law on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in the Science and Research Sector adopted in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic and to add a family policy component, as has been granted until now for the care of children under 18 years of age or other relatives in need of care (WissZeitVG §2 (1) in the version of 23 May 2017). We ask for your participation. petition

How do we get through the crisis successfully?

At the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, a behavioural study has started to investigate how the population in Germany reacts to the exceptional situation caused by COVID-19 and under which personal circumstances it supports political measures. What mechanisms do people find to adapt to their everyday life, which is characterized by fear for their health on the one hand and unprecedented restrictions on the other? What causes them to comply with official regulations? What is their individual assessment of the tense situation? The online study by the Chair of Personality and Social Psychology of Prof. Florian G. Kaiser contains a total of 80 questions. People over the age of 16 can now participate in the study nationwide. In the online survey, the participants are asked to make statements about their everyday habits and then to assess their current behaviour in the context of the Corona crisis in Germany. Answering the questions takes a maximum of 20 minutes. The study is intended to provide results on which approaches are most effective in ensuring that the population accepts and supports the drastic measures of the federal and state governments in the short term: Is this more likely to be achieved by highlighting personal health aspects or by strengthening normative messages, i.e. clear behavioural demands? Participation in the study is still possible until the end of May this year at the latest. online survey

Tom Assmann from the OVGU with a cargo bicycle The digital marketplace for Magdeburg

This is where the business reopens - online: With YourLocal, a committed team of Magdeburg residents has developed a digital marketplace for retailers and, in the future, also for gastronomes to support smaller local businesses in particular. The Corona crisis is causing great problems for local retailers and gastronomic establishments. In some cases, the shops come to a complete standstill because the traditional sales channels such as buying in a shop are not available at all or only to a very limited extent for a long time, but wage and fixed costs remain. Correspondingly, many traders are threatened in their economic existence. Some of the actors behind YourLocal are alumni of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. YourLocal relies among other things on the cargo bicycle as an environmentally friendly option for delivery. more

herCAREER will take place for the sixth time on 29 and 30 October 2020 in Munich. herCAREER is much more than a career fair. It thrives on the participation of its exhibitors and partners in terms of content and creates spaces for networking and exchange of experience on specialist topics, digitisation and new work. No other career fair focuses so much on the exchange and sharing of knowledge and networking. Employers benefit most from this, as they position themselves as sparring partners rather than mere employees, in order to promote women in their career planning - especially within their own company. In addition, the fair offers companies the opportunity to get in touch with exciting personalities and to inspire them for their Innovation Labs, Hubs, Incubators, Accelerators etc. Detailed information about the trade fair, the programme and registration can be found here

Consequences of the crisis: increase in domestic violence

More women are seeking advice via the nationwide help hotline to better protect themselves against the threat of violence at home. In order to relieve the burden on families, Federal Minister of Women's Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD) advocates opening daycare centers and playgrounds earlier than planned. The help line "Violence against Women", which can be reached throughout Germany, recorded a 17.5% increase in demand for counseling by women between April 13 and 19, compared to the first week of April, according to a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs (BMFSFJ), who told the German Press Agency (dpa). Now a trend is to be determined, after the quantity of the consulting discussions looked for over the assistance telephone first similarly developed as in the previous year, said the spokeswoman of the BMFSFJ. more

Study Sexism in everyday life

The starting point of the pilot study "Sexism in Everyday Life is" is the question of what people in Germany understand by sexism, whether and where they experience or observe sexism in their everyday life, what possibilities they see for dealing with it, coping with it, avoiding it, taking precautions and what their vision of a society free of sexism is. In terms of content, experiences, perceptions, reaction patterns and strategies in dealing with sexism are explored. The focus is on subjective perceptions and typecasting, who are the victims of sexism in everyday life, what characterises the perpetrators, where sexism occurs in everyday life and where it does not, what are the places, social spaces and situations of sexism. Furthermore, it is a question of preventive or interventional measures which those affected (can) take and also of measures which women and men assign to the policy of preventing sexism and protecting against sexism. to the study

Political mandate: Women take on the main burden and are the most vulnerable

Women are at the centre of the global corona crisis, as nurses, carers and saleswomen. As a result, they are exposed to a higher risk of infection, while at the same time the risk of becoming victims of violence increases. The OECD study presented in Berlin on 9 April describes the role of women in the fight against COVID-19 and calls for political measures to support them. more
