International Women's Day 2020: Behind the story - Women on Insta, from cliché to empowerment
On the occasion of International Women's Day on 8 March 2020, the Bundestag faction Bündnis 90/Die Grünen cordially invites you to a Parliamentary Evening on 10 March in Berlin. The discussion will focus on the staging of femininity, on role models and the empowerment of women on social media. Both influencers and a media expert will be guests and speakers. It is noticeable that femininity on YouTube, Instagram and Co. often comes across as classically traditional: beauty tutorials, fashion, figure and relationship tips. And everything in high gloss. At the same time, new possibilities for self-empowerment are opening up. Influencers use their reach for everyday stories, fashion statements and product placements - but feminist themes are also very popular. They take a stand against misogyny, racism and agitation. Expert conference on the topic of sexualised discrimination and violence at scientific institutions from 04 to 05 June 2020 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg
Hashtags like #MeToo bring it into the collective consciousness: Sexualised discrimination and violence is still a current, but often taboo subject. It can occur in all areas of society - scientific institutions as places of study and work are not exempt from it and are therefore obliged to actively counter discrimination and sexual harassment and violence in their spatial and cultural infrastructure. In a two-day symposium, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg would like to illuminate this complex and important topic with you in view of all people working at a scientific institution. Legal frameworks, gaps in protection, as well as duties and possibilities for action will be discussed and space for the exchange of experiences will be created. The symposium is thus aimed equally at students, management, administration, lecturers and researchers and aims to encourage and enable (pro-)active and secure action by those involved. Women rate their research results more cautiously
The language scientists choose to describe their discoveries can increase the level of attention of colleagues, encourage subsequent citations and possibly facilitate career advancement. Male scientists use words like "excellent", "novel" and "unique" in the headlines and summaries of their articles much more often than women. These are the results of a study conducted by an international team of researchers from the University of Mannheim, Harvard Medical School and Yale University and published in the BMJ journal. "Differences in how women present their research achievements compared to men could contribute to the persistent discrimination of female scientists," said Assistant Professor Marc Lerchenmüller from the University of Mannheim, who headed the study. The large-scale study, which quantifies gender-specific differences in the language used in biomedical research, is the first of its kind. Detailed information on the study and other up-to-date information on women in science and research can be found in the current issue of the CEWS Journal here |
