Christa Lorenz ALS Research Prize 2019 for Prof. Stefanie Schreiber of the University Hospital Magdeburg

On December 18, 2019, the Christa Lorenz ALS Research Prize was awarded in the lecture hall of the University Hospital Magdeburg by the Foundation for Medical Science Frankfurt a.M. for the Promotion of Research Science in the Serious Neurodegenerative Disease ALS to Prof.in Stefanie Schreiber, Senior Physician at the Neurological University Hospital Magdeburg, for her work on nerve sonography in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The research prize of the Foundation for Medical Science, based in Frankfurt a. M. and endowed with 15,000 euros, was awarded for the second time to the research location Magdeburg. She receives this award for her numerous studies in which she was able to show new concepts for the involvement of the peripheral nervous system including innovative potential therapeutic approaches using high-resolution ultrasound in ALS. In addition to her work as senior physician in the Department of Neurology, Professor Schreiber heads the "Mixed Pathologies of Cerebral Aging" research group as well as a research group at the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE).

Successful application of the OVGU within the framework of the Women Professors Programme III of the BMBF

In December 2019, the OVGU was able to generate funds for equality measures for the university by appointing Professor Raphaela Porsch as of 01.10.2019 (General Didactics at the Faculty of Human Sciences). These funds will be used for the established coaching and mentoring program COMETiN for young female scientists. COMETiN is aimed at women who want to actively shape their professional future and are seeking a professorship or other leadership position in science and research. The program offers young women scientists the opportunity to continuously and sustainably deal with the planning and implementation of their career steps within the framework of various modules, to broaden their key academic qualifications and to establish supportive relationships with female scientists. The programme supports the individual career development of women scientists from the doctoral phase onwards.

Mentoring program MeCoSa has free places and travel expenses

The mentoring and coaching programme of Saxony-Anhalt, MeCoSa, still has vacant places in workshops for young female scientists. On 5 and 6 February 2020, the workshop "Career strategies and career planning for young female scientists" will take place from 9:30 to 17:00 in Halle and on 18 and 19 February 2020 the workshop "Career development through research funding for female doctoral students" will take place from 9:00 to 17:00 in Magdeburg. Registrations via maria.rosenbaum@ovgu.de  Travel expenses can be charged to the project.

Workshop Career Planning on 06. and 07.02.2020

The workshop Career Planning will take place from 06. to 07.02.2020, in each case from 9-17 o'clock, in English language. In the phase of scientific qualification there is often uncertainty about how the further career should and can be planned. De facto, as an academic you have excellent chances to take a career path that suits you and that will inspire you in the long run and lead to inner satisfaction. The workshop supports you in concretizing this path. Based on the opportunities that your individual profile offers professionally, the focus is on the question of how you can realize such options. The seminar is intended as an aid to conscious planning for a career outside of science, i.e. in the free economy or in another professional field. One billion rising - International action against violence against women on 14.02.2020

One Billion Rising is a dance protest action against violence against women* and girls*. For Valentine's Day 2020, one billion (=USA number: "Billion") women worldwide are called to strike and protest.  At 2 p.m. there will be a dance flash mob to the German title song One Billion Rising "Spreng die Ketten" at the venue Allee-Center Magdeburg in Ernst-Reuter-Allee 11 with a short concert by the band phoeNic (www.phoenic.de/ ).

Mental strategies in dealing with everyday challenges of doctoral students

On 5 dates in February and March, Techniker Krankenkasse invites doctoral candidates to a series of seminars to develop strategies for dealing with everyday challenges. You will learn methods and strategies for coping with the pressure to perform in research and publishing ("publish or perish"), time and deadline pressure, possibly financial burdens and family obligations. Good time management is as much a part of the program as getting to know autogenic training. In addition, the seminar shows doctoral students sustainable ways to protect themselves from stress and to overcome exam nerves or stage fright. Seminar language is German. Application of theses of female students in the field of media technology until 29.02.2020

For the twelfth time, the ARD/ZDF Förderpreis is looking for women with pioneering ideas and important impulses for media technology. The aim is to attract more women to the technology sectors. ARD and ZDF are therefore looking for "innovators" of media technology, i.e. female students from subjects closely related to radio, television and online media. On the website you will find conditions of participation, dates and important documents.

Announcement of the Bertha Benz Prize for Women Engineers 2020

Female engineers with an outstanding doctorate can be nominated in Germany until 01 March 2020. In order to highlight the achievements of women in the engineering sciences and encourage them to take up studies in these disciplines and pursue a scientific career, the Daimler and Benz Foundation annually awards the "Bertha Benz Prize" to a female engineer who has completed an outstanding doctorate in Germany with a Dr.-Ing. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros. Information on the requirements for nomination, how to submit your application via the Foundation's homepage, as well as the selection procedure and the award ceremony, can be found here.

‚Beyond the Glass Ceiling – Women Professors Between Recognition and Marginalization ‘ Conference on 03. - 05. February 2020 at the TU Darmstadt

As part of the BMBF-funded joint research project „Beyond the Glass Ceiling – Women Professors Between Recognition and Marginalization“ the TU As part of the project, the Technical University of Darmstadt together with the Holzminden University of Applied Sciences and Arts is organising a scientific conference from 3 - 5 February 2020 and cordially invites you to attend. During the conference, initial research results of the project as well as the results of various other research on the situation of female professors at universities will be presented and intensively discussed. Secure remaining places now for the 11th meccanica feminale from 18 - 22.02.2020 at Furtwangen University! The aim is to support women in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering and to offer them a platform for communication and professional and personal exchange. The meccanica feminale is primarily aimed at interested working women from the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering and related disciplines and invites them to exchange ideas with students, scientists and professionals from engineering and related disciplines. Conference Day on 20 February 2020 with application workshop

On February 20, 2020, Furtwangen University will host the Conference Day with expert lectures from industry and science. The event is open to all interested parties free of charge. Registration for the lectures is not necessary. Participants of the meccanica feminale also have the opportunity to participate in the workshop "Job Interviews" as part of the Conference Day. 'Research Excellence in Northern Germany' Conference from 28. – 29. February 2020

After the funding decisions of the Excellence Initiative in 2018 and 2019, how can North German research locations successfully position themselves in the coming years? The Protestant Academy Loccum brings together university management, university administrations, funding institutions and researchers at its conference. Together they face the task of convincingly positioning North German research locations in the next ten years. A 24-hour intensive exchange is in prospect. You are cordially invited to take part! 3rd conference of the Coachingnetz Wissenschaft e.V. on 2 and 3 March 2021

Save the date: The 3rd conference of the Coachingnetz Wissenschaft e.V. "Wissenschaftscoaching 3.0" will take place at the Wissenschaftszentrum Bonn from 2 to 3 March 2021 with exciting lectures, interactive workshops and the exchange with new network partners*. Workshop ‚Body and presence training for women ‘ on 14 March 2020

Presence is required for all kinds of performances, whether in public or in private. But what do I do when I am unsure? The seminar, organised by the Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony-Anhalt, is intended to show interested participants how they can communicate content convincingly with a confident voice and the targeted use of body language. They will be familiarized with creative methods and techniques from acting and improvisation, which will enable them to positively reinforce the content of speeches with voice and body language and to prepare themselves specifically for presentations. Workshop 'Gender-reflected teaching - challenges and opportunities' on 19 March 2020 with Dr. Lena Eckert

The TU Chemnitz invites you to a workshop on the topic of gender-sensitive teaching on 19 March 2020. Participants will learn about the various fields of activity in which "gender in university teaching" plays a role. In addition, techniques and strategies will be presented that allow dealing with gender at different levels of teaching and enable the productive and equal participation of all students and teachers as well as developing scope for action. Concrete examples from practice will be worked on, which can also be brought in by the participants. A workshop flyer for download and information on registration can be found here.

Digital Gender Gap: Women not yet equal in the digital sector

Women and men living in the Federal Republic of Germany still differ considerably in the degree of digitisation. This is the result of the study on the "Digital Gender Gap" (DGG) published in early January 2020 by Initiative D21 and the Competence Center Technology-Diversity-Equity. Read more.

Germany is gradually catching up in the field of equality

The Global Gender Gap Report attested Germany progress in gender equality policy. For the first time since 2007, the Federal Republic of Germany has moved up into the top 10, and in the previous year it was still on 14th place. The annual report of the World Economic Forum (WEF) notes in particular improvements in the proportion of women in politics. Read more.

Federal Minister Giffey wants to promote men as a contribution to her gender equality strategy

The Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth Franziska Giffey (SPD) will promote men's alliances as part of her gender equality strategy. At the first press conference of the new year, the Minister presented her concept for the "Equality Year 2020". Read more.
