Data tool MINT

How has the number of students in MINT subjects developed in recent years? How many women are currently studying an engineering subject? And how many women are actually involved in computer science? With the new "Komm, mach MINT." data tool, these and other questions regarding developments in the MINT subject groups can be answered quickly and easily. The figures are based on data from the Federal Statistical Office that "Komm, mach MINT." evaluated for the MINT subject areas. The tool is available at www.komm-mach-mint.de/Service/Daten-Fakten

University and Politics

The gender pay gap in professorships

The Gender Report 2019 on gender (in)justice at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia focuses for the first time on the gender pay gap in professorships. This is tantamount to breaking a taboo: can there be what must not be? Don't professors research and teach under the same conditions in terms of labour law and pay, and are they paid the same for the same work of equal value - regardless of gender?
You can read the whole article on the Gender Blog.

New Circular creates legal basis for Girls'Day Future Day/ Boys'Day Future Day - Call on 26.03.2020

On 21.10.2019 a new decree for the implementation of the Future Day was published in the School Administration Gazette for the State of Saxony-Anhalt. The participation of the pupils as well as for the organisation of this special day of vocational orientation was thus created a legal basis.

The Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend, the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung as well as 12 action partners and the national coordination office jointly call for Girls' Day on 26.03.2020. Companies are called upon to provide girls from grade 5 with important impulses for a diverse career and study orientation - free of gender stereotypes.

Network Women's and Gender Studies NRW: Ready to cross borders. Interview about Emmy Noether with Mechthild Koreuber

Emmy Noether (1882-1935) was in many ways the first mathematician of the 20th century. With her unusual working methods and original thinking, she contributed significantly to bringing structural thinking into the mathematical disciplines. Already with her habilitation thesis of 1918 she solved central mathematical problems of relativity. As a woman and Jewess, teaching in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s, she was subject to multiple professional discrimination. Sandra Beaufaÿs spoke with Mechthild Koreuber, whose research initiated an interdisciplinary exchange on the scientist's work and biography. "Rassismus an Hochschulen" edited by Daniela Heitzmann and Kathrin Houda

Daniela Heitzmann and Kathrin Houda have collected twelve contributions in their volume "Racism at Universities" under the following chapters: Racist structures in the past and present, Experienced Racisms & Resistant Practices and Racism in Disciplinary Knowledge Productions. The editors have begun with the aim of "contributing to the further visualisation and discussion of everyday and institutional racism at universities and in the sciences in German-speaking countries" (Heitzmann/Houda 2020: 9). As white academics, they want to take "responsibility for their own privileges" and not leave the discussion of racism to those who are affected (Heitzmann/Houda 2020: 9). They criticise the fact that Germany's efforts to combat racism are inadequate and that the higher education sector is often left out of the equation. Both the introduction and the compilation of the articles reflect the intention of the two editors and highlight the gaps in the debate on racism at universities. The contributions range from a critical analysis of Sarah Dornick's discourse of excellence on racism, a study on racialisation practices at German universities by Shiva Amiri, reflections on conditions and possibilities of empowerment and re-presentation of students who have experienced racism, by Karima Popal-Akhzarati, to a critique of visualised racism in geographical migration research by Susen Engel and Lin Hierse, and many other topics. It should be noted that the book does not provide a basic introduction to racism and that some essays do not further explain the presupposed concept of critical whiteness.
